Dr. Horng-Jiun Lin currently serves as a full-time Associate Professor of Flute in the Department of Music at National Sun Yat-sen University. He is also the Conductor of the National Sun Yat-sen University Wind Orchestra, the Siwan Wind Orchestra, and the National Feng-Hsin Senior High School Symphony Orchestra.
Dr. Lin received his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree from The Ohio State University in 2008.

In 1998, he traveled to the United States to pursue undergraduate studies in flute performance at the Boston Conservatory, where he studied with internationally renowned flutists, including Doriot Anthony Dwyer, former Principal Flutist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Elinor Preble. In 2002, he entered The Ohio State University to pursue his Master’s degree in Flute Performance, studying with Professor Katherine Borst Jones, a former President of the National Flute Association.

In 2004, Dr. Lin was awarded a three-year, full doctoral assistantship at The Ohio State University and remained there to pursue his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. During his doctoral studies, he received several prestigious honors and awards, including the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs Graduate Award for Excellence and The Ohio State University Outstanding Graduate Achievement Award, in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a doctoral student. He is among the relatively small number of Taiwanese flutists to have completed their undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral education in music in the United States.

During his doctoral studies at The Ohio State University, Dr. Lin won First Prize in the university’s concerto competition and subsequently performed as a concerto soloist with The Ohio State University Symphony Orchestra. During his years in the United States, he was invited to perform in Boston at a celebratory concert marking the inauguration of the President of Taiwan (R. O. C.). While pursuing his doctoral degree, he was also a member of the Stratosphere Flute Quartet, with which he toured throughout the Midwestern United States and presented more than thirty concerts.

After returning to Taiwan in 2008, Dr. Lin devoted himself to flute performance and pedagogy. He has previously served on the faculties of the Department of Music at National University of Tainan, the Department of Music at National Taichung University of Education, and the Department of Music at Tainan University of Technology. In 2010, he was invited to perform at the National Flute Association Annual Convention in the United States. In 2019, he was invited to Kookmin University in Seoul, South Korea, where he performed a concerto in collaboration with local flutists.

During his eleven years of study in the United States, Dr. Lin also demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in conducting. His initial training in orchestral conducting began with Dr. Peter Cokkinias, Professor of Orchestral Conducting at the Boston Conservatory. While pursuing his doctoral degree at The Ohio State University, Dr. Lin was recognized by Dr. Russel Mikkelson, the Chair of the university’s conducting department, and was admitted to the conducting graduate program in the School of Music as a second area of specialization. He subsequently studied wind conducting under the tutelage of Dr. Mikkelson.

Dr. Lin previously served as conductor of both the Orchestra and Wind Ensemble of the Department of Music at National University of Tainan. He has also been invited on numerous occasions to appear as a guest conductor with distinguished ensembles, including the NTSO National Taiwan Youth Symphony Orchestra, the NTSO National Taiwan Wind Orchestra, the Taiwan Youth Wind Orchestra, the Taiwan Youth Band, the Taiwan Artists Symphony Orchestra, the Kaohsiung Civic Symphonic Wind Orchestra, the Kaohsiung Metropolitan Wind Ensemble, the National Cheng Kung University Wind Orchestra, the Tainan Mystery Symphony Wind Orchestra, and the Tainan Alumni Band.

Since 2016, Dr. Lin has served as Conductor of the National Sun Yat-sen University Wind Orchestra. Under his direction, the ensemble has repeatedly received the highest distinction of Superior in the College Division, Group A, Wind Ensemble category of the National Student Music Competition. In 2023, the NSYSU ensemble was recognized as an Outstanding Award-winning Ensemble in the National Student Music Competition organized by the National Taiwan Arts Education Center and presented a concert at the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts-Weiwuying Concert Hall.

During his master’s studies beginning in 2002, Dr. Lin also studied computer music, multimedia digital music production, sound design and scoring for animation, and recording engineering under Dr. Thomas Wells and Dr. Marc Ainger at The Ohio State University. From 2002 to 2008, he served as Studio Manager and Professional Consultant for the recording studios at Weigel Hall and Hughes Hall at The Ohio State University, where he completed more than 700 recording projects and concert sessions.

In 2008, Dr. Lin obtained professional factory-authorized certification in flute and piccolo repair from the internationally renowned Straubinger Flute Company in the United States. He became the first flutist in Taiwan to obtain professional certification in the installation of the company’s two patented pad systems, as well as professional qualifications in instrument repair. After returning to Taiwan, he established and taught courses in woodwind instrument repair in the Department of Music at National Sun Yat-sen University. His doctoral dissertation, An Illustrated Basic Flute Repair Manual for Professionals, has been downloaded more than 200,000 times worldwide.

In 2020, Dr. Lin received the National Sun Yat-sen University Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2024 and 2025, he was selected as a Teaching Leadership Fellow at National Sun Yat-sen University. He has also been awarded funding from the Ministry of Education’s Teaching Practice Research Program on five occasions.
