DEPARTMENT INTRO

ABOUT US

The Department of Music at National Sun Yat-sen University was established in 1989, with its master’s program founded in 1994. Dedicated to cultivating music professionals with strong artistic and humanistic qualities, the department has continued to grow through the efforts of its faculty, students, and alumni.

In 2001, the department relocated to the College of Liberal Arts Building, providing students with well-equipped facilities including a recording studio, rehearsal rooms, specialized classrooms, practice rooms, and extensive music resources.

The department offers a rigorous and diverse curriculum designed to enhance students’ musical understanding, creativity, and performance abilities while developing interdisciplinary skills for the evolving needs of society. In addition to comprehensive academic and performance training, the department provides teacher education programs and interdisciplinary programs in Music Arts Management and Marketing, Expressive Arts Therapy, and Music and Elderly Care.

To broaden students’ perspectives and strengthen their professional abilities, the department regularly invites guest professors, organizes academic conferences, and provides numerous performance opportunities through concerto competitions, orchestra, choir, chamber music concerts, and tours. Students are also encouraged to participate in competitions, exchange programs, and international music festivals to expand their global vision.

The department currently offers six areas of specialization at the undergraduate level: Piano, Strings, Winds, Percussion, Vocal Performance, and Composition & Application. The graduate program provides advanced studies in Piano, Strings, Winds, Vocal Performance, Conducting (Choral and Orchestral Conducting), Music Theory and Composition, and Musicology.

Our faculty consists of 11 full-time professors, all holding doctoral degrees, along with 37 adjunct faculty members who are recognized professionals and leading educators in Taiwan’s music community.

Beyond supporting students during their studies, the department maintains strong connections with its alumni and regards their career development and achievements as valuable indicators of educational success.
Over the past five years, more than 80% of graduates have reported overall satisfaction with their alma mater. Our alumni continue to make meaningful contributions in diverse fields—educating future generations, pursuing advanced performance studies internationally, and promoting arts and culture within society—applying the knowledge and experiences gained at National Sun Yat-sen University to give back to the community.
