Shieh holds a Meisterklasse Diploma (Konzertexamen) from the University of Music and Theatre Leipzig (HMT Leipzig) as well as Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich (HMT München). In recognition of his outstanding musicianship, he was twice awarded the Ministry of Education Studying Abroad Scholarship, the German Yehudi Menuhin Live Music Now (LMN) Scholarship, and the HMT München Scholarship. During his studies, he served as a Teaching Assistant at HMT Leipzig, instructing cello and chamber music courses. Since returning to Taiwan, he has dedicated himself to both performance and pedagogy. He previously taught at National Tainan University, National Chiayi University, and the Institute of Music at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. He currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Music at National Sun Yat-sen University.
Cellist Meng-Hsuan Shieh began playing the cello at age six, earning numerous awards in National Student Music Competitions in Taiwan. After completing high school, he moved to Germany to study at HMT München under Prof. Reiner Ginzel, former Principal Cellist of the Dresden Philharmonic. After earning his Master’s degree, he entered HMT Leipzig to study with German cellist Prof. Peter Hoerr while serving as a Teaching Assistant for cello and chamber music. In 2023, he obtained his Meisterklasse Diploma with full marks and the highest honor of “Mit Auszeichnung” (Distinction).
Since 2015, Shieh has been a core member of the Munich-based ARCIS Cello Quartet, touring regularly across Europe and recording original repertoire for cello quartet. His performance venues include the Munich Philharmonie, Herkulessaal der Residenz München, Liederhalle Stuttgart, Taipei National Concert Hall, and National Taichung Theater. He was also invited to give the opening concert at the prestigious Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings. Alongside his dedication to solo and chamber repertoire, Shieh possesses a deep passion for orchestral performance, having been selected to participate in orchestral masterclasses under eminent conductors such as Herbert Blomstedt, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and Mariss Jansons. From 2018 to 2023, he held positions as an academy member of the Munich Symphony Orchestra (Münchner Symphoniker), as well as contract cellist with the Wiesbaden State Theatre (Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden) and the Leipzig Opera (Oper Leipzig).
Since returning to Taiwan, Shieh has remained deeply committed to music education and research. Alongside his teaching, he actively engages in performance and music outreach. He has presented a series of thematic solo recitals, including “Liebestreu”, “Germanic Impressions”, “Romantic Norway”, and “Voices of the North”. He has also been invited to participate in a wide range of collaborative performances, including the “Encountering the Masters” chamber music series with violinist Shien-Ta Su, as well as orchestral and chamber music performances in Weiwuying’s “24-Hour Music Marathon”. In 2024, he joined the Counterpoint Ensemble. In 2025, at the invitation of violinist Nai-Yuan Hu, he joined the Taiwan Connection Chamber Orchestra.
